At Sunrise Roofing we often get many questions about the different types of asphalt shingles on the market today; their benefits, obvious drawbacks and of course price. First, let us say that asphalt single roofing systems are the most common roofing materials used in the U.S. today and for good reason, price. Most people, in the short term, are more concerned with protecting their home’s structure using the most cost-effective product than they are in choosing the longest lasting and most aesthetic materials available. Tile roofs and metal roofs are a much more durable and longer lasting alternative to asphalt shingles but cost thousands of dollars more to purchase, install and repair. But for a roofing material that is both cheaper to purchase and durable, asphalt shingles are by far the best alternative. Easy for most roofing contractors to install, repair and replace, asphalt shingles come in a variety of types, materials, styles, colors and have minimum maintenance and upkeep.
The major manufacturers of asphalt shingles in the United States offer three basic types of asphalt shingles to choose from; Traditional, 3-tab or strip shingles, Architectural or Dimensional shingles, Luxury or Premium shingles. Without getting too complicated, lets discuss the individual elements and advantages of each shingle.
TRADITIONAL SHINGLES
These types of shingles are by far the oldest and cheapest type of asphalt shingle on the market today. Identified by their simple, consistent appearance (same rectangular shape), traditional or 3-tab shingles blending certain colors into one shingle. Sunrise Roofing does not recommend or install these types of shingles due to their lack of strength, durability, minimal wind resistant quality and value.
ARCHITECTURAL OR DIMENSIONAL SHINGLES
These types of shingles also have a third name, laminate shingles and are very common because of their cost and durability. Composed of multi-layers, architectural shingles use both asphalt and fiberglass in their construction. This gives the shingle distinct advantages in its ability to withstand high winds, heavy rain, hail and extreme heat. They also are very cost-effective, easy to install giving roofing companies the ability to charge less in the installation. Sunrise Roofing’s primary asphalt shingle choice is an Architectural Shingle and all for the right reasons.
PREMIUM SHINGLES
These types of expensive laminate shingles are made to mimic other types of materials such as cedar shakes or slate tiles. They are specially ordered and made by a select group of manufacturers. Sunrise Roofing has a great deal of experience installing and repairing premium asphalt shingles. Its not your everyday shingle but it does have its place giving the roof an aesthetic look especially where it is in close proximity to other houses using the same type of shingle.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOFS
What type of asphalt shingles are best?
For us here at Sunrise Roofing, Dimensional Asphalt shingles are the best choice for Florida homes due to their lightweight, strength, durability against the elements, single sheet application and are the least expensive, type of shingle to repair and install.
What are the main drawbacks to a Shingled Roof?
Asphalt shingle roofs are susceptible to very high winds, can sustain damage, and have limited tolerance to mold and mildew growth if not property installed and maintained. If improperly installed they can also blister and trap water behind the shingle. That is why it is very important to choose the right roofer to install them.
What is the greatest advantage to having a shingled roof?
The reason we install only the best Architectural or Dimensional asphalt shingle is because of its durability in North Florida’s climate, if correctly vented and installed by a professional roofing contractor.
The life span of a 3-tab shingle is between 20 and 25 years. Dimensional shingles last longer from 25 to 35 years depending on installation, maintenance and seasonal weather changes.
At Sunrise Roofing we love them because they give a homeowner a wide choice of colors and styles to fit every need.
